Trash Extravaganza - 04/01/26

Despite a forecast calling for sunshine and warm weather, April 1st had other plans for us as we tackled what many have come to call “Trash Island.” What could have been a discouraging start quickly turned into a powerful day of impact!

After being alerted to the need by Deputy Clark and Jennifer Kauppi, we gathered our faithful crew and got to work. In total, 11 participants with lived experience showed up ready to serve, and together we filled the majority of a 40-yard dumpster. It was no small feat considering the muddy terrain and steady rain.

While the conditions prevented us from safely accessing every area, we were still able to make a significant dent. A return visit is already in mind for later this month, once things dry out, to finish what we started. Even so, the transformation we were able to accomplish in just one day is something to be proud of!

And in true April Fool’s Day fashion, right as we wrapped up… the rain stopped.

As always, work like this takes a village, and we are incredibly grateful for the many hands and partnerships that made this day possible. Special thanks to Kate Taylor for helping coordinate arrangements with the property owner and Waste Management (WM) and to Progressive Rail for allowing us to use their property for dumpster placement. We’re also thankful for our faithful friend Mark Blanchard from Solve Oregon for his continued support and for bringing an extra gorilla cart. Hollie helped make the day run smoothly with setup and teardown, and Claire kept the team fueled with pizza delivery. We’re grateful to Jennifer and Deputy Clark for their coordination and leadership, and to Ryan and the Waste Management team for their perfect placement and early arrival.

We’re so thankful for each person who continues to show up, rain or shine, to do this meaningful and often messy work together!
